Top Tips for Boosting Your SEO Ranking

As a small business owner, you’ll hear a lot about the importance of SEO and improving your Google rankings. For this month’s blog post I’ve summarised my tips for simple actions that you can take to boost your website’s SEO:

Images:

Firstly, it’s important to optimise your image to a suitable size for the web. I use a free plugin called Smush, which works excellently if you’re using a WordPress site. This will simply compress your images without reducing the quality.

Secondly, you can label all of your images using Alt-Text. This adds a worded description to your images so that search engines can include them in keyword results. For more information about adding Alt-text, see this blog post by New Forest Writing Co.

Focus Keywords:

The current advice is to use one focus keyword throughout, and if you can include a location then that’s even better. For example, I would use ‘Web Design Southampton’ consistently across all pages, posts and images on my website.

You can also include your focus keyword in your SEO title, meta descriptions and even within your permalink (URL) for each page, if possible.

Analyse and Reflect:

Make sure that you have set up Google Analytics and Webmasters for your website. Keeping track of what works successfully is the key to building on those successes! If you’d like more advice about this, get in touch and we can arrange some time to go through this together.

Your XML Sitemap:

Creating an XML file sitemap is essential for sustaining the high rankings, which are controlled by algorithms. Google Webmasters can use the XML file information to review how recently your pages were updated and how well linked they are to other internal and external sites. This helps search engines judge their relevance to the topic the user searched for. Remember that SEO is about individual web pages as well as entire websites.

Once you’ve created your XML sitemap make sure that you upload it to Google Webmasters so that it can be doing all the hard work for you!

Helping Hands:

If you have a WordPress website you can also use a plugin called Yoast to help with your SEO.

Additionally, I offer dedicated SEO training on a 1-2-1 basis for any small business owners who would like specific guidance for improving their search engine rankings. At only £50+VAT per hour, this is a very efficient investment in your long-term SEO strategy!
