We’re full steam ahead into January. That NYE party is now a distant memory, the bubbles long gone and the resolutions still feeling strong. Now is the perfect time to think about your business for the year ahead.
It will come as no surprise that I believe a powerful website is the key to growing and transforming your business. It’s your online business card – your way of connecting with your dream audience and turning silent snoopers into avid fans.
However, I also know that getting a brand new, all singing and all dancing website is a hefty investment (especially after a pricey Christmas). But, that doesn’t mean that your website has to suffer. Some simple tweaks and adjustments can improve the user experience, strengthen your brand and, ultimately, boost your sales.
So, how can you get started on your website review?
Right, let’s get started!
Kick off your website review with a hefty content audit. And when I say content, I mean ALL content.
There’s nothing more off putting than a website with out of date content. Incorrect content causes obstacles in the buyer journey and let’s face it, nobody wants that. Start off by looking at:
Does all the information in those spaces still apply? If not, fix fix fix!
While you’re there, consider whether the content is as strong as possible and on brand. It should be engaging and informative, SEO rich and eye-catching. You also want to make sure that it is well structured; is the navigation organised in the best way to reach your audience?
Now look at your branding – is it embedded throughout the website? Has anything changed since your last update? And are the right social media accounts connected?
Run through your website with a fine tooth comb. The smallest mistakes can have the biggest impact.
TOP TIP: Play around with different copy in your ‘call to action’ sections on your website. Remember that you are always trying to guide customers to the next step (and the ultimate end goal).
How often do you check your analytics? Spoiler alert – it needs to be a regular occurrence.
Our analytics show us what does and doesn’t work. If a certain webpage has a particularly high bounce rate, you need to find out why. If one page is ranking super high on Google, then try to replicate what’s hitting the mark throughout the rest of your site. Likewise if one service is getting sky high conversions, but the rest are dwindling, you need to bring the others up to the same level.
Your analytics will also show you who is visiting your site, how and why. You can use this information to not only influence action on your site, but your marketing strategy as a whole.
TOP TIP: Don’t just focus on your website platform analytics – pay attention to Google analytics too!
This might sound like an obvious one, but if something isn’t working or connecting on your website, then it needs immediate attention.
When you’ve DIY’d your own website, it’s super easy to make mistakes. For example, if you’ve got an eCommerce website, does the checkout work properly? Are your enquiries properly connected? Do you have any dead links? Do all links where you need them to?
Here you should even think about loading times. Do certain images hold up loading speed? Or maybe they don’t load at all?
Go through with your ‘virtual’ red pen and make a note of everything and anything that needs your magic touch.

Competitor research is another thing that you ought to return to. Competitors change, as do the areas that you’ll want to compare and analyse.
As a starter for ten, you can:
Remember; competitor research isn’t about copying. It’s about pinpointing how you can do things better.
TOP TIP: What is ONE THING that you can do that is different from all of your competitors?
The original purpose of your website could still stand – however, it could also be totally different without you even realising.
Ask yourself:
You then need to take the time to explore whether or not your website is fulfilling all of those areas. If not, then what are you really getting out of it?
