Increasing sales is the core goal for most eCommerce businesses – while there are countless other success markers, they tend to come down to this. How can you get your products in front of more people? What do you need to do to turn curious customers into die-hard fans?
For many, the Summer will have brought with it a slightly quieter pace. August in particular is often a time to down tools. And I don’t know about you, but this can feel pretty scary. Without the continuous influx of enquiries, I can’t help but wonder whether the business is failing.
My rational brain knows that this isn’t the case… And I hope yours does too!
So, instead of focusing on the slower sales of the summer holidays, instead why don’t we put the changes in place to boost our sales and maximise our business reach for the Autumn season?
Afterall, you know what they say: back to school, back to business!
Read on for my seven top tips on how to increase your online sales this Autumn.

If you’re an eCommerce store that relies on lifestyle based images, check in on whether or not your images match the season. For example, is your photography very bright and sunny? Are your products displayed in bustling gardens?
While this isn’t the be all and end all, if you want to bring your customers into your world it’s a good idea to make that as easy as possible for them. Autumn calls for cosy environments and warm, nurturing vibes. If you have them to hand, you could swap in images that better suit the season we are moving into.
If your sales aren’t landing, it could be that your copy isn’t resonating with your audience. One reason for this could be that it doesn’t come across as honest or trustworthy.
People are getting more and more savvy to false promises in copy. You know the sort – those promises that this £500 skin cream will make you look like Beyonce or that a downloadable course bundle will make you quadruple your income in four days. The fact is that it’s tiresome and people can see straight through it.
Make sure that your copy doesn’t fall prey to this rhetoric. It is your job to get potential customers to know, like and trust you; genuine and transparent copy can be a great way to help you get there.
While honesty is key when building brand trust, there’s nothing wrong with creating a sense of urgency in your eCommerce store.
Add functionality to your website that tells the user when certain items are selling out or if other customers have your item in their basket. Plugins such as WooCommerce for WordPress offer this (and much more) and are also super simple to implement. You could also add a discount code for a limited amount of time which is displayed through a newsletter popup.
You don’t want to come across as pushy, but a gentle nudge in the right direction could give your sales the boost that they need.
User experience is an important part of holistic SEO; if your website isn’t easy to navigate, full of relevant information and built with an intuitive structure, then what reason are you giving the user to stick around?
Spend some time considering:
Essentially, you want the moment a potential customer lands on your site to that final order confirmation email to feel slick and seamless. If it isn’t, what can you do to improve it?
Are you using the blog page on your website? If not, why?!
Your blog offers a brilliant opportunity to show your expertise, bring more personality to your brand, engage your audience and provide valuable, meaningful advice. It’s also a great tool for driving traffic to your website and getting more eyeballs on your eCommerce store.
Plus, you can really have fun with the topics!
For example, if you’re a jewellery maker you could write a blog about the ‘5 ways to keep your silver sparking clean’. If you’re a plant-based cake maker, you could write one on the ‘Top 10 ways to make (easy!) plant-based changes in your life’.
It’s another way to market and differentiate yourself from the competition; and what could be better than that?

When done right, ads are a brilliant way to attract new people to your website. Your analytics will provide all the information you need to make sure any potential ads hit the mark.
You may choose to focus entirely on Google Ads or perhaps you want to pour your attention into social media ads – whatever you decide, be sure not to simply throw money at them aimlessly and hope for the best. You need to be strategic about who you target and how, including making sure the ads themselves pack a punch and that you have done all the necessary research on your audience personas.
If you want to explore Facebook Ads, I would strongly recommend you read this brilliant blog from WordStream.
Testimonials are King when it comes to selling products. They’re an eCommerce store’s bread and butter – do not ignore their influence!
When putting testimonials on your website, have a think about:
Ideally you want to make them easy to read, as up to date as possible and BURSTING with praise.
