Getting your website set up and ready to go is an essential step in your business journey. Most of the work involves showcasing and describing the brand you love, but there are a few technical elements which it can help to have an understanding of first.
This guide is a quick walk through of what you need to get your website ready to go: from finding a domain, connecting it to a website host, linking your professional email addresses and getting it all SSL certified.
Domains
What will your website be called? The ‘domain name’ is the user-facing name that makes up part of your website’s URL address and any corresponding email accounts that you create. For example, ours is littlebigbox.co.uk
You will have to purchase a domain name that is unique – nobody else can have used it before. Once you have chosen, you pay an annual fee to own it. We offer a package to manage this for you, priced at £15 a year for a ‘.co.uk’ or £30 a year for a ‘.com’ domain.
Hosting
Once you have a domain name, you need to connect it to a website hosting service. At LittleBigBox, we predominantly use WordPress, and provide a range of hosting options to suit your business needs.
Hosting is the exciting part, where your website becomes visible to the world! All URLs go live and your pages can be optimised to appear in search engine results. Your website needs to ‘belong’ somewhere on the internet – it will be stored on a central server which allows it to be accessible at all times. The difference between a good and bad website hosting service usually becomes apparent in the website speed, and therefore the user experience. Nobody stays to read a slow-loading site!
Hosting is essentially the ongoing maintenance of making sure your website is running as it should, troubleshooting any problems and keeping access open at all times.
Most businesses choose to connect a domain-name email for their business communications,
because this adds a level of professionalism in the eyes of potential clients and customers.
You can have multiple email addresses connected with your domain name; such as ‘april@littlebigbox.co.uk’ or ‘info@littlebigbox.co.uk’ or even ‘theofficegoldfish@littlebigbox.xo.uk’ …whatever floats your boat! If you need more than ten domain associated email accounts, the price of hosting these increases accordingly.
SSL Certificate
When people buy online, they need to know that they can trust the website. When activated, the
SSL certificate displays as a green padlock in the web address browser, indicating to clients and customers that your site is safe.
At Littlebigbox, we can manage your SSL certificate for £10+VAT / month, and cannot recommend this enough! Google is now insisting that websites become certified as safe, and are penalising any website without an SSL certificate by placing it much lower down in search rankings.
The process of creating and launching a website should be an enjoyable experience, and at LittleBigBox we love being part of that process. Take a look at some of our favourite portfolio work and do get in touch if you feel that we can help you with getting your website ready to go…
