New Year’s Website Resolutions | 7 ways to improve your website

New year, new website vibes – right? Read on for our top 7 ways to start 2023 in the best possible way with your website.

The new year marks the perfect opportunity to reset and map out goals and plans for the year ahead. It’s a fresh slate – a chance to look both back and forward. Here at Littlebigbox, we love it. We love the excitement and the potential for growth and change. Unsurprisingly – for us – this centres around one of the key components of a business: your website.

So, maybe you’re starting the year thinking that you’d like to take some positive steps for your online presence. If that’s the case, we’ve pulled together 7 new year’s resolutions that you can apply to your business website.

1. Review your analytics

First thing’s first – let’s look backwards. Take the time to absorb your website analytics so that you have a firm idea of where your business, website and conversions currently stand so that you can plot out ways to improve on it.

There are many metrics that are useful to look at, but some of the key ones include:

  • Number of site visitors
  • Bounce rate
  • Average pageviews per session
  • Session duration
  • Average time on page
  • Top traffic sources
  • Devices used
  • Interactions per visit
  • Click through rate
  • Conversion rate

Your website platform provider should have a built in feature to track your analytics, but for an in-depth analysis we recommend digging into Google analytics. If you have WordPress, you’ll also have access to some brilliant plugins – such as Google Site Kit, which is made specifically by Google – that make your metrics analysis even more straightforward.

This is a great place to kick things off as it provides a base for you to build upon with everything else that you do within your website. Ask yourself these questions:

  • How can I increase these numbers?
  • What might be getting in the way of improvement?
  • What’s working well (and how can I replicate it)?

2. Find and update old information

There’s going to be a lot of information that needs updating as you move into a new year – one of which is your website footer. We see MANY businesses with out of date website footers because they’ve assumed they will update automatically – spoiler alert, they don’t! Be sure to update it to 2023 – and pronto.

It’s also worth checking in on:

  • Any old site content – for example, events, services or products that are no longer relevant or available
  • Broken links – a major, flashing red cross when it comes to SEO and conversion rates
  • Contact information – this should include your social media handles
  • Plugins – whether there any more recent updates that you can instal

If you find it, update it: simple.

3. Run a content audit

When we say content, we mean ALL of it – your copy, your imagery, video, lead magnets… The whole thing.

Yes, this takes time. But the benefits will be felt by you and your audience for the long term. As you work through your content, look out for:

  • Spelling mistakes
  • Inaccuracies
  • Anywhere you can add in trending keywords
  • Unnecessary pages / information
  • Ways to add more diversity into your imagery
  • Whether your content matches your goals
  • How readable your content is
  • How accessible your content is

We suggest dedicating a chunk of time to this – you may be surprised by how much content you actually have!

4. Optimise your site for search engines

SEO is an enormous topic – one that we are VERY passionate about. We’ve even written an entire SEO mini series on it. And when we do talk about SEO, we do it from two perspectives: holistic SEO and technical SEO (both on and off-site).

A holistic SEO strategy is one that puts a pin in keywords and rankings and instead focuses on the individual finding your content. This is because holistic SEO is about the user: it is built around their needs and experience with your website. This, in turn, will make your website rank higher on Google.

Unsurprisingly, the technical side of things looks at everything else. Keywords. Meta-data. Backlinks. Internal links. Headings. Authority scores. Domain rating. Text readability. Impressions. Pages indexed. And yes – the list goes on.

There are some great tools on the market (free and paid) for auditing and monitoring your SEO – HubSpot has a super useful article on it, which you can read here.

5. Start an ideas list

This is a new one for us but something we’re really benefiting from.

Let’s face it – no one has unlimited time or resources. However, that shouldn’t stop us from letting our imagination run free. Instead, start an ideas list.

Your ideas list could be anywhere: a paper list in your notebook, on the notes function of your phone, a document on your computer, a project board… A place that is easily accessible and that you’ll come back to, time and time again.

You can then use it to record ANY and ALL ideas that come to you. From blog post ideas to lead magnet topics, new pages to tasks that you need to complete. Jot it all down. It could even be a new way that you want to introduce your services or how you want to title your pages. Big, small and everything in between. Get. It. On. The. List.

6. Write a blog

Is your blog page full of nothing but tumbleweeds? Was the last time you shared something June 2019? Well then, you know what to do!

You can start the new year in a super positive way by writing and sharing a blog post. Blogs have ENORMOUS value. Regularly writing SEO-tailored blogs can:

  • Improve your search engine ranking
  • Boost leads
  • Increase conversions
  • Strengthen your position as a thought leader
  • Engage your readers

And there’s ways to do it right – to produce content that actually has an impact. We’ve written about it in this blog, how to blog for SEO success.

Then once you’ve written one… Write another… And another… Keep that engine going.

7. Design for impact

MAYBE 2023 is the year that you decide to fully amp up your website design?

A strategically and creatively designed website can (and will) work wonders for your brand. It can:

  • Maximise brand awareness
  • Help you connect with your dream customers
  • Differentiate you from your competitors
  • Enable more people to find you
  • Turn silent snoopers into avid fans

There’s an art to this – subtle adjustments as well as major changes that will help your website stand out from the crowd. Especially when you opt for a custom website (something we’ve written a blog about) you’ll find that all of your needs are catered for.

Luckily, this is something we’re experts at.
