NHS & medical websites: why accessibility and compliance matter

When Lonsdale Medical Centre, an NHS GP practice based in North London, reached out to us, they needed a website that met strict NHS digital standards while remaining clear, welcoming and easy for patients to use.

Their old site was difficult to navigate and didn’t meet accessibility requirements, making it hard for patients to find what they needed. We built a brand new website that’s compliant, patient friendly, and simple for the team to manage.

What they needed

Lonsdale Medical Centre wanted a website that would:

• Meet NHS and accessibility compliance standards
• Be easy for patients to find key information such as appointments and prescriptions
• Have a clear, mobile friendly layout
• Include forms and quick links for self referrals and NHS services
• Be simple for staff to update in house

What we did

We designed and built a fully bespoke WordPress website that keeps patients’ needs at the heart of every page. The new layout is calm, structured, and follows NHS digital guidelines, ensuring everything from colours to font sizes meets accessibility best practices.

We also researched and implemented all necessary NHS compliance requirements including accessibility statements, privacy notices, and emergency update options for staff.

SEO and accessibility optimisation

Alongside the design work, we carried out full on page SEO optimisation.

  • Every page includes clear meta titles and descriptions following NHS content standards
  • Alt text and headings were carefully written for accessibility and Google visibility
  • We set up Google Search Console and connected GA4 via Site Kit for ongoing performance tracking

The result is a website that not only performs beautifully for users but also ranks well for local medical searches such as Lonsdale Medical Centre London and NHS GP in North London.

Client feedback

“We worked with April and Littlebigbox to rebuild our NHS GP practice website from scratch. April was amazing. The site had to meet various NHS compliance requirements, which she researched and resolved, and she created something that not only ticks all the boxes but is also really easy to use. We’ve had great feedback from both patients and staff.”
