5 ways to add personality to your website

Creating a website that bursts with your brand personality is no easy feat: but it’s crucial if you want your site to stand out from the crowd. Read my 5 top tips to add personality to your website.

Personality is everything. And the more and more clients I get the joy of working with, the more I see that the businesses that really put their personality front and centre are the ones that succeed

However, if branding and marketing doesn’t come naturally to you, you might not know how to weave that personality into your online identity. It might even be something you feel a tad nervous about.

Which I totally get – it can feel like you’re really putting yourself out there, can’t it? But believe me when I say it can make all the difference.

Unfortunately, personality isn’t something that a website developer can simply drop into your site. It needs to be led by you – the client – and woven throughout the content that you provide to your website designer.

But, where do you even begin? Luckily, we’ve got you covered.

Read on for our top 5 ways to add personality to your website.

1. Follow your brand

A great way to add personality to your website is to make sure your brand is clear and cohesive from start to finish. Do you have brand guidelines? Now’s the time to get them out!

You want your reader to have an easy and engaging experience across your site – by threading your brand throughout your website, you can strengthen that sense of flow. In addition, the colours and fonts that you use will immediately ignite certain emotions and response; both of which heighten that sense of personality.

Next steps: make sure your fonts, colours, logo, graphics, images and page layouts are unequivocally ‘you’ as a business and brand.

2. Talk like a human

The way you communicate on your website holds enormous power – so, take advantage of it.

I read FAR too many websites where the copy sounds automated and robotic; and the fact is, it’s impossible to relate to that kind of messaging! One of the easiest (in my opinion) ways to layer personality into your website is to write like you speak.

Imagine you’re having a conversation with the reader – how would that sound? What kinds of words would you use? What tempo? What rhythm?

Remember; it is 100% possible to be professional but relatable in your content. Experiment and try to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Next steps: look at your copy and find areas where you can make it sound more like you. A great way to test this is to read it out loud and ask yourself – does this feel natural for me?

3. Make images personal

There’s a time and a place for stock imagery – and with some amazing websites out there like Unsplash and Moyo Studio, the quality of stock images can be seriously high. However… What are those images telling your audience about you and your brand?

Of course, if you can invest in professional brand photography then I highly recommend it – but something is better than nothing. People want to see your face! They want to know who they’re going to be working with. They want to see your products, the people you serve.

People buy from people – stop hiding behind that screen.

Next steps: run an audit across your site and check that (if you can’t have 100% branded images) you have over 50% of personal images over stock imagery.

4. Add video

Not only does video take that personal touch of imagery to the next level, but your consumers actually prefer it. Video is super easy to consume. All a viewer has to do is sit back and take it in (compared to reading which takes an active element). Minimal effort is required. And let’s face it – it’s human nature to take the path of least resistance and video is that path.

The great thing about video is that people can gauge energy from it – they get to hear your voice, see the way you move and get a greater understanding of who you are.

Next steps: record a 30 second video of you introducing your core product or service and add it onto your homepage or about page.

5. Have fun!

This has to be my favourite one – have some fun with your website!

Take your call to actions… How much more personality does ‘YAAAS GIMME GIMME GIMME’ evoke over ‘Find out more’? Or ‘Show me the goods!’ over ‘BUY NOW’?

Find something that works for you… Not every brand is going to be tongue pops and finger clicks (we certainly aren’t!). But that doesn’t mean you can’t be playful in all of the elements mentioned above. Take your video content; maybe you’ve got a bit of a goofy personality… Show those quirks in the video! Or you’re a dog-parent (oh hey!) and want to include the pup in your imagery.

If you have fun, your audience is going to have fun too.

Next steps: your call to actions are a great place to start. Work through all of them and see how you can make them more engaging.
